What are your personal essential routines and rituals for a great day?
It seems like lots of people and blog posts talk about morning routines lately. For a good reason, since we all have a peak performance window in our day during which we get the most done in the most effective and focused way. It’s that time when we don’t let distractions get in the way of accomplishing what we’ve set out to do.
I’m definitely a morning person, so I am most focused and motivated to get things done just after waking up. By 3pm I usually feel drained and find it hard to keep myself accountable, no matter what I’ve accomplished that day so far.
While I know lots of people who are similar and work well in the mornings (hence all those blog post and articles on morning routines), this might not be you. Maybe you work really well in the afternoon.
That got me thinking - as much as morning routines matter, daily rituals no matter what time of day are just as important.
I realised this on a day that felt pretty shit almost a year ago now, where I didn’t get much done and generally felt weird and dissatisfied. So I took notice of what had been different that day.
I realised that there are a few essential things I have to do each day to be and work at my best, which I had missed that day. These are only the bare basics and some of them seem so obvious, but without that groundwork every other routine or productivity measure I’m trying to implement won’t work. Here’s a list of what these rituals are for me:
Brush my teeth
Go outside and get some fresh air
Move my body/work out
Get enough sleep
While I sleep at night and brush my teeth in the mornings and evenings, it doesn’t really matter when or what order I do the other ones in. It just matters that I do them to feel and be my most productive self.
Also, meditating for example can take different forms. While I tried sitting down by myself and meditate in a quiet space for a long time, this doesn’t work as well for me as doing yoga. When I do yoga my mind and body are in the same space, and my thoughts wander much less than if I’m just sitting in a quiet room.
Once I’ve implemented all of them there are a few other routines that help me get stuff done, such as journaling, getting out of the house and working from my co-working space, or connecting with people in person to bounce ideas off each other.
Journaling is something I’ve been doing every day for a while now, and might very likely add to the “essential list of rituals” soon. Some days I spend a lot of time organising my thoughts, other times I just write for 5-10 minutes both in the morning and evening.
We’re all always learning. This topic is something I’m very keen on and excited to learn more about. What is your experience with routines and rituals? What basic rituals do you implement every day (maybe even without consciously noticing)?
